Installation

We're interested in creating an installation somewhat like this image, around the History of Computing at UT Austin, Decwar, and the Dawn of the Internet in Texas. One new aspect of this is a global collaboration forming around the Dawn of the Internet. In Texas, that meant UT Austin and it's at the heart of our project. Eric generated this picture and it gives a good idea of the type of thing we could share with people.

The proposed exhibit would tell the story of Decwar, created at the UT Computation Center in 1978 and recognized as one of the first multiplayer network games, if not the first successful one. The exhibit would be modest and fact-based: wall text, archival images and documents, possible artifacts or reproductions, a potential mini-documentary, and one or more playable terminals where visitors could try the recovered modern demonstration version. The story would cover the game itself, the Computation Center/PDP-10 environment, its spread to other systems, its later life as MegaWars on CompuServe through the 1990s, and the recovery efforts.
